BDQ : The art of quebecois comics | Musée Pop de Trois-Rivières

The Musée Pop de Trois-Rivières mandated La bande à Paul creative team to create a temporary thematic exhibition on the theme of Quebecois comic books. Occupying a large 4,000 sq. ft. temporary exhibition hall, the exhibition demystifies the many steps in the comic book-making process, while shining a spotlight on the key artists in this field that’s booming in Quebec.

Knowing that many comic book exhibitions had been presented in recent years, we wanted to offer a product that featured distinct content in a unique style. We chose to dress the walls with monumental comic book boxes in which the main comic book creation steps were presented.

Also, to make the exhibition even more human and accessible, our team decided to feature the artists who bring to life the characters the public loves so much. To this end, a photography session was organized to snap professional black and white portraits of each of the cartoonists. The photos were presented in large format, on twenty-three freestanding structures occupying the hall’s central space. Taken together, the structures evoked a forest through which the visitor was invited to wander.

Around the outside walls of the room, the eight stages of comic book creation were shown in the form of gigantic pages featuring strong graphic treatment.
