The memory of stone | Minéro Museum

The Thetford Mines Mineralogical Museum, now known as Minéro, was looking to revamp its permanent exhibit while also covering three types of heritage: industrial, scientific and historical. Although mining has been the driving force behind the community's development, asbestos mining in Quebec has always been controversial. Together with the Museum’s team, we chose to focus on the region’s people. In so doing, we could shine a spotlight on regional history while creating a bridge to the post-asbestos era.

We began by collecting testimonials from many stakeholders in the region before integrating them into the exhibition in various ways. Some testimonials were paired with archival photos. The result breathed new life into the images and offered up a fresh perspective. Other excerpts are presented in audio or video format using multimedia devices. The approach we used connects the visitor with the community and gives a human voice to the history of the region while reinforcing a sense of belonging and pride in its people.

The exhibit showcases an extensive collection of minerals and mining equipment, making it possible to come to terms with the scientific and industrial impacts of asbestos, which could not be ignored. Finally, curious young visitors can enjoy a playful and interactive trail designed just for them.
